A Vastu house plan places every room in the direction Vastu Shastra recommends for it — the kitchen in the fire corner, the master bedroom in the zone of stability, the pooja room in the sacred north-east, and the centre of the house left open. This guide shows the ideal layout as a simple zone chart, explains where each room goes, and walks through house plans for east, north, west and south facing homes.

Whether you are designing a new home with an architect or checking a plan you already have, the same rules apply. When you are ready, you can upload your plan to our free Vastu floor plan calculator to see how it scores.

What makes a house plan Vastu compliant?

  1. It is aligned to true north. Every zone is measured from north, so a plan drawn with the wrong north gives the wrong answer for every room.
  2. The outline is square or rectangular. Cuts and odd extensions — especially a missing north-east corner — weaken the zones they remove.
  3. The Brahmasthan is open. The centre of the house is kept free of walls, columns, toilets and staircases.
  4. Each room is in its own zone. The kitchen, bedrooms, pooja room and toilets each have an ideal direction.
  5. The main door is in a favourable pada. Where the door sits along the wall matters as much as which way the house faces.

Vastu house plan layout chart

Divide the plan of your house into a 3 × 3 grid with north at the top. Each of the nine zones is governed by an element and suits particular rooms. This chart is the layout our calculator scores against:

You do not need every room in its ideal zone — very few real homes manage that. What matters most are the high-weight rooms: the main door, kitchen, master bedroom, pooja room and toilets. Get those right and keep the centre open, and most house plans score well.

Room-by-room placement in a Vastu house plan

Main entrance

The door position matters more than the side of the house. Each wall is divided into 8 padas, and every side has its best ones: E3–E4 on the east wall, N3–N5 on the north, S3–S4 on the south and W3–W4 on the west (W5 and N8 are also good). A door in the right pada on a south or west wall scores as well as one on the east or north.

Living room

North, east or north-east, where the house receives the most light. West and north-west also work; avoid the south-east fire zone.

Kitchen

South-east (the Agni corner) is ideal, with the cook facing east while cooking; north-west is the second-best choice. Avoid the north-east, south-west and the centre.

Master bedroom

South-west, the zone of stability, for the head of the family — sleep with the head towards the south. South and west are also good; avoid the north-east, south-east and the centre.

Children's bedroom

West is ideal; north-west, north and east also work. Keep the south-west for the parents.

Guest bedroom

North-west, the zone of movement — guests are comfortable but do not overstay.

Pooja room

North-east (the Ishan corner), or else east or north. Avoid the south-east, south and south-west.

Dining room

West or east are the best positions; north also works well.

Toilets and bathrooms

WNW and SSW are the best spots; ESE and north-west are also good. Never in the north-east or the Brahmasthan — a toilet at the centre is the most serious defect.

Staircase

South-west is the best place, adding weight to that corner; south and west are also good. Avoid the north-east, north, east and the centre of the house.

Water tanks

Underground tank or borewell in the north-east; overhead tank in the south-west or west.

Garage and parking

North-west or south-east. Keep the north-east and south-west free of vehicles.

Vastu house plans by facing direction

The room zones are fixed by the compass, so they stay the same whichever way your house faces. What changes is where the main door can go and which side of the plot is open to the road.

East facing house plan

  • Main door in the E3 or E4 pada, just north of the centre of the east wall.
  • Living room in the east or north-east to take in the morning sun.
  • Keep the east side lower and more open than the west — a front garden or verandah suits it.

North facing house plan

  • Main door in the N3 to N5 padas of the north wall.
  • Living room or an open verandah in the north — the wealth zone.
  • Keep the north side open with larger windows; put heavy rooms to the south.

West facing house plan

  • Main door in the Sugriva, Pushpadanta or Varuna padas (W3–W5).
  • Dining room or children's bedroom on the west side.
  • Keep the north-east of the plan open even though the road is to the west.

South facing house plan

  • Main door in the S3 or S4 pada — avoid the south-west half of the wall (S5–S8).
  • Keep the south-west heavy and closed with the master bedroom there.
  • Balance the plan with more windows and open space in the north and east.

Diagonal facings follow the same zone chart: north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west facing houses. Choosing land first? Check it with the Vastu plot calculator before you design the house.

Using this layout in a flat

The same chart applies to a flat: draw the grid over your own unit, with your front door as the main entrance. A flat often faces a different way from the building, so take north from the builder's unit plan or a compass reading inside the flat. Since walls in a flat are rarely movable, focus on how you use each room — sleep in the south-west room, cook facing east, and keep the north-east light and uncluttered. See how to check Vastu of a flat to score your own unit.

Common Vastu mistakes in house plans

  • A toilet or bathroom in the north-east corner
  • A staircase, column or toilet in the Brahmasthan at the centre
  • The kitchen in the north-east or south-west
  • The master bedroom in the north-east or south-east
  • A main door in a weak pada — check the exact pada, not just the side of the house
  • A cut or missing north-east corner in the building outline
  • Heavy storage or an overhead tank in the north-east
  • Using the plan’s “up” as north without checking the north arrow

Reading a chart is one thing; checking a real plan by hand is slow and easy to get wrong. Upload your house plan and the calculator finds the north arrow, the main door and the rooms, then scores each one against these rules — free for your first two checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Vastu house plan?

A Vastu house plan is a home layout in which every room sits in the direction Vastu Shastra recommends for it — the kitchen in the south-east, master bedroom in the south-west, pooja room in the north-east, an open centre (Brahmasthan) and a main door in a favourable pada — all measured from true north.

Which facing house plan is best as per Vastu?

North-east, north and east facing plots are rated highest, with west and south facing ones average. But for the house itself, every side has main door padas that score as well as the best east or north ones, so a west or south facing plan with the right pada and the rooms in their correct zones can score just as well.

Where should the kitchen be in a Vastu house plan?

The south-east (Agni corner) is the ideal place for the kitchen, with the cook facing east. The north-west is the second-best option. Avoid a kitchen in the north-east, south-west or directly in the centre of the house.

Where should the staircase be in a Vastu house plan?

The south-west is the best place for a staircase, with the south and west as good alternatives. Avoid a staircase in the north-east, north or east, and never run it through the centre of the home.

Where should toilets be placed in a Vastu house plan?

The best spots for toilets are west-of-north-west (WNW) and south-of-south-west (SSW); east-of-south-east (ESE) and the north-west are also good. Never place a toilet in the north-east or in the Brahmasthan at the centre of the house.

Can I check if my existing house plan follows Vastu?

Yes. Upload your house plan to the free Vastu floor plan calculator, confirm north and the main entrance, and it scores every room against its ideal zone. You get a Vastuscore™, verdict and improvement potential in a few minutes.
