Best Sleeping Direction as per Vastu Shastra
Vastu Shastra and the older texts on daily conduct (āchāra) agree on one rule for sleep, summed up in a well-known Sanskrit verse:
"Prāk-śirāḥ śayane vidyāt, dhanam āyuś ca dakṣiṇe; paścime prabalā cintā, hāni-mṛtyur athottare."
Head to the east brings knowledge; to the south, wealth and long life; to the west, strong worries; to the north, loss and ill-health.
Head towards South — the best direction
The most recommended sleeping position in Vastu. Your feet point north, and the body rests in line with the Earth's magnetic field. It is linked to deep, uninterrupted sleep, good health, long life and steady wealth — the best choice for couples, elders and anyone who sleeps poorly.
Head towards East — the direction of knowledge
The east is where the sun rises and is ruled by Indra and Surya. Sleeping with the head to the east is said to improve memory, concentration and clarity, which makes it the best sleeping direction for students, children, teachers and anyone doing creative or spiritual work.
Head towards West — acceptable, not ideal
Modern websites disagree about the west, but the classical verse is clear: a westward head brings "prabala chinta", a mind full of worries. It can mean restless sleep and vivid dreams. It is not harmful like the north, so use it when the south and east walls are not available.
Head towards North — avoid
Every traditional source says never sleep with the head to the north. The usual explanation is magnetic: the head, like a magnet's north pole, repels the Earth's north, which is said to strain blood circulation and cause headaches and broken sleep. In Hindu custom the head of the departed is also placed to the north.
Vastu Sleeping Directions: All 8 Directions Compared

Sleeping Direction for Couples, Students, Children and Elders
Married couples
Sleep in the south-west master bedroom with both heads to the south. Traditionally the wife sleeps on the husband's left. Use one mattress rather than two pushed together, and keep beams and mirrors away from the bed — both are believed to create distance between partners.
Students
Head towards the east for memory, focus and better results. Put the study desk so the student faces east or north while studying.
Children and babies
School-age children do best with the head towards the east, the direction of learning; south is also very good. For a baby or toddler who isn't studying yet, there's no real reason to prefer east over south — either is fine, and safe-sleep rules matter far more than direction: on the back, firm flat mattress, nothing loose in the crib. The children's bedroom is best in the west.
Elderly family members
Head towards the south for stable health and calm sleep. A ground-floor room in the south-west, south or west keeps them grounded and avoids stairs.
Guests
The guest bedroom belongs in the north-west, the air zone suited to short stays. Guests should still sleep with their head to the south or east.
People with stress or insomnia
Head towards the south, the most settling direction. Keep phones and chargers away from your head, and make sure the bed isn't under a beam or facing a mirror.
Is your bedroom in the right part of the house?
The right head direction helps, but Vastu starts with where each room sits. Scan a photo of your floor plan (or enter the rooms) to get your Vastuscore™, verdict and how much it could improve. The full report then shows, room by room, what to fix.
Bed Placement and Bed Position as per Vastu
Getting the bed direction right according to Vastu is half the job. The bed position in the room (and the master bed position in particular) matters too:
South-west corner
The best bed location as per Vastu is the south-west part of the bedroom — the zone of stability and rest. The same applies to a cot or a child's bed.
Solid wall behind your head
The headboard should rest against a solid wall, not a window. A solid wooden headboard adds support.
Small gap from the wall
Leave 3–4 inches between the bed and the wall so energy can flow around it.
Wooden bed
Wood is preferred over metal frames. Keep metal objects away from your head.
No beam overhead
Never sleep under an exposed beam — it is believed to cause stress and headaches.
Feet not at the door
Don't point your feet straight at the door (the "coffin position").
No mirror opposite the bed
A mirror facing the bed shouldn't reflect you while you sleep. Move it or cover it at night.
No clutter under the bed
Keep the space under the bed clear of old items, broken things and paperwork.

Sleeping Position as per Vastu: Which Side to Sleep On
When people ask about the best sleeping position according to Vastu, they usually mean the direction of the head, covered above: head south is the best sleeping position as per Vastu Shastra, head east is next. Vastu's companion science, Ayurveda, adds advice on which side of the body to sleep on:
Left side
BestThe best sleeping side in Ayurveda ("vama kukshi"). It is said to help digestion and circulation, especially after dinner, and is often advised in pregnancy.
On your back
Very goodFine for most people and keeps the spine straight. Not ideal if you snore.
Right side
AcceptableAcceptable, and some find it calming, but traditionally less recommended than the left side after a meal.
On your stomach
AvoidAvoid. It strains the neck and back and is considered the least restful sleeping position.
Medical advice comes first: if you have a back, heart or breathing condition, or are pregnant, follow your doctor's guidance on sleeping position.
Which Direction to Sleep for Money and Wealth?
Sleep with your head towards the south. The classical verse names the south as the direction of dhanam āyuś — wealth and long life. Your feet then point north, towards Kubera, the lord of wealth, who rules the north zone of the home. For money, also keep the north of your home and bedroom open, clean and clutter-free.
North–South or East–West: What Vastu and Science Say
In Vastu, lying on the north–south line is best — but only with your head to the south. The same line with your head to the north is the worst position. The east–west line is second best, with your head to the east.
The usual reason given is the Earth's magnetic field and its effect on circulation. To be straightforward: science hasn't proven that bed direction changes sleep quality — a few small studies hint at an effect, but nothing conclusive. What research does confirm is that a regular bedtime, a dark, cool, quiet room and a comfortable bed matter a lot. Following Vastu costs nothing, so many people do both.
What If You Can't Sleep With Your Head to the South or East?
- Try every wall. East and even west are much better than north. A headboard next to a door is better than a head to the north.
- Turn the bed at an angle. Pointing your head south-west or south-east still follows the south.
- Swap rooms. If another bedroom allows a south or east headboard, it may be worth moving.
- Last resort for a north headboard: use a wooden bed with a wooden plank under the mattress, keep metal away from your head, and keep the north-east of the room light and clutter-free.

How to Find Your Sleeping Direction at Home (USA and Abroad)
Stand at the foot of the bed
Face the headboard and hold your phone flat in front of you.
Open a compass app
The direction you are facing is the direction your head points when you lie down.
Use true north
In much of the USA and Canada, magnetic north is 10°+ away from true north. Turn on "Use True North" in your compass settings.
Vastu sleeping direction in the USA, UK, Canada or Australia works the same as in India, because it follows the compass. Not sure which way your whole house faces? Read the house-facing Vastu guide, then use the calculator above with your walls.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vastu Sleeping Direction
Which is the best direction to sleep as per Vastu?
The best sleeping direction as per Vastu is with your head towards the south and feet towards the north. It is linked to deep sleep, good health, long life and wealth. Head towards the east is the next best, and is the best direction for students. Never sleep with your head towards the north.
What is the best sleeping position according to Vastu Shastra?
The best sleeping position according to Vastu Shastra is lying with your head towards the south and feet towards the north, in a bed placed in the south-west of the bedroom. Head towards the east is the next best position. For the side of the body, Ayurveda recommends sleeping on your left side.
Which side should I sleep on as per Vastu — left or right?
Vastu itself is about direction, but its companion science Ayurveda says the left side is the best sleeping side, as it is believed to aid digestion and circulation. Sleeping on your back is also fine; avoid sleeping on your stomach.
Why should we not sleep with our head towards the north?
Vastu Shastra and the traditional texts on daily conduct say sleeping with the head to the north brings loss, poor health and disturbed sleep. The usual explanation is that the head, like the north pole of a magnet, repels the Earth's north pole. In Hindu custom the head of the departed is also placed to the north, which is another reason it is avoided for sleep.
Is it good to sleep with the head towards the west as per Vastu?
West is acceptable but not ideal. The classical verse on sleeping says head to the west brings "prabala chinta" (strong worries), so it can mean a restless mind or vivid dreams. Use it only when south and east are not possible. It is still far better than the north.
Which direction should students sleep as per Vastu?
Students should sleep with their head towards the east. The east is the direction of the rising sun and of knowledge (vidya), and is said to improve memory, concentration and learning. South is the next best choice.
Which direction should a married couple sleep as per Vastu?
A married couple should sleep in the south-west bedroom with their heads towards the south. Traditionally the wife sleeps on the left side of the husband. Use a single mattress rather than two joined mattresses, and avoid a beam over the bed, as both are believed to create distance between partners.
Which direction should I sleep for money and wealth?
Sleep with your head towards the south for money and wealth. The classical verse says head to the south brings "dhanam ayush", wealth and long life. Your feet then point north, towards Kubera, the lord of wealth.
Is it better to sleep north–south or east–west?
In Vastu, lying on the north–south line is best, but only with the head to the south (head north is the worst position). The east–west line is the next best, with the head to the east. Science has not proven a link between bed direction and sleep, so if a direction is uncomfortable for you, comfort and a regular routine matter most.
Can I sleep with my head towards the south-east, south-west or north-east?
Head towards the south-west is very good — it follows the south and adds stability. South-east is acceptable, as it lies between the two good directions, though the fire corner can feel restless for some. Avoid the north-east and north-west, as both lean towards the north.
Where should the bed be placed in the bedroom as per Vastu?
Place the bed in the south-west part of the bedroom with the headboard against a solid south (or east) wall. Leave a gap of 3–4 inches between the bed and the wall. Do not put the bed under a beam, in the exact centre of the room, or with your feet pointing straight at the door.
Can a mirror face the bed as per Vastu?
No. Vastu says a mirror should not reflect you while you sleep, as it is believed to disturb sleep and cause quarrels. Move the mirror, or cover it with a cloth at night. The same applies to a TV screen facing the bed.
What if my bedroom does not allow my head to face south or east?
First try the other walls: east and then west are both better than north. If only the north wall works, consider turning the bed at an angle, swapping rooms, or moving the bed to another wall even if the door is nearby. As a last resort, use a wooden bed, keep the north-east of the room light and clutter-free, and avoid metal under your head.
Does sleeping direction matter for a baby?
Vastu suggests the head towards the east or south for babies and young children. Safety comes first: always follow safe-sleep advice (on the back, firm flat mattress, nothing loose in the crib). Choose the crib position for safety, then the direction.
Does Vastu sleeping direction apply in the USA and other countries?
Yes. Vastu directions are based on the compass, so they apply anywhere in the world. Use true north rather than magnetic north: in parts of the USA the two differ by more than 10 degrees. Most phone compass apps have a "true north" setting.
How do I find which direction my head points while sleeping?
Stand at the foot of the bed facing the headboard and open a compass app on your phone. The direction you are facing is the direction your head points when you lie down. If the headboard is against the south wall, you sleep with your head to the south.
